Te Rōpū Whakahau Hui-ā-tau 2012

I was very privileged to attend the 20th Birthday Hui-ā-tau of Te Rōpū Whakahau last week at Waipapa marae in Tamaki Makaurau. It was a fantastic few days, and did wonders recharging my batteries. All the talks were great, and at least as importantly the conversations, between and after the talks were also excellent.

I think my talk went ok, and I got some nice positive feedback. I’m just glad I managed to do something that people found useful.

As you would expect at a gathering of Māori library and information workers, there were a lot of questions about Koha and the TM situation. I was happy to be able to report the lawyers had the situation under control and we were all looking forward to a positive outcome. I can’t imagine that the company who shall remain nameless will ever be doing business with any library that has any Māori influence on it.

Apart from the kōrero, there was amazing whanaungatanga and amazing kai. I would thoroughly recommend anyone Māori involved in libraries or information management join Te Rōpū Whakahau and get along to the Hui-ā-tau next year in Whakatane, I’m hooked that’s for sure.

Fixing whitespace when applying patches with git

The way the Koha project works is that we require any patch to be signed off at least by 2 people, usually 3, ideally even more. So we do a lot of applying of patches. Using git-bz this is very easy, but occasionally  when applying a patch you spot whitespace errors and if you are like me, you want to fix them, and if you are also like me, you are lazy.

What I have done is set these 2 options

git config --global core.whitespace trailing-space,space-before-tab
git config --global apply.whitespace fix

So this is what used to happen:

% git checkout -b 5729 kc/master
Previous HEAD position was 288c1a7... Bug 7139 :
Log addition and deletion of circulation messages
Branch 5729 set up to track remote branch master from kc.
Switched to a new branch '5729'
% git bz apply 5729
bugs.koha-community.org
Bug 5729 - Add coins information to the intranet

Bug 5729 - Add CoinS to intranet
Apply? [yn] y

Applying: Bug 5729 - Add CoinS to intranet
/home/chrisc/git/catalyst-koha/.git/rebase-apply/patch:61: trailing whitespace.
[% END %]
/home/chrisc/git/catalyst-koha/.git/rebase-apply/patch:76: trailing whitespace.
[% END %]
/home/chrisc/git/catalyst-koha/.git/rebase-apply/patch:91: trailing whitespace.
[% END %]
warning: 3 lines add whitespace errors.

And now with the config set

% git bz apply 5729
bugs.koha-community.org
Bug 5729 - Add coins information to the intranet

Bug 5729 - Add CoinS to intranet
Apply? [yn] y

Applying: Bug 5729 - Add CoinS to intranet
/home/chrisc/git/catalyst-koha/.git/rebase-apply/patch:61: trailing whitespace.
    [% END %]
/home/chrisc/git/catalyst-koha/.git/rebase-apply/patch:76: trailing whitespace.
[% END %]
/home/chrisc/git/catalyst-koha/.git/rebase-apply/patch:91: trailing whitespace.
    [% END %]
warning: 3 lines applied after fixing whitespace errors.

Patch applied with the whitespace fix I can now  test then signoff

git commit --amend -s

And attach to the bug

git bz attach -e 5729 HEAD

Access 2011 – You shoulda been there.

This past week I had the privilege of attending my first ever Access conference. I had a great time and thought I should do a bit of a write up.

The venue

Access was held in Vancouver this year, which is an absolutely beautiful city. I spent most of Monday exploring Stanley Park. I got to see otters eating what looked to me like a flounder, and an eagle catch a fish too. it is a really neat place here are a couple of the photos I took on my crappy phone camera.

Tuesday started with Dim Sum, great food and great company, which I think was the theme of the entire trip. Following that I got to have a look around Tara’s library and then spent a few hours on Granville Island.

The Conference

The conference proper was awesome, there was really only one talk that I wasn’t interested in and lots that were great. The ones I enjoyed the most were:

  • Open to the Public: Indigenous Collections and the Ethics of Openness : Kimberly Christen and Alex Merrill
  • Open research data: fun, important, and in need of librarians : Heather Piwowar
  •  All together now: creating software ecosystems from open, interoperable components : Bess Sadler
The social events
These were fantastic, again great food and great company, adding in to the mix great beer too. As with any conference the talks are good, but the most important thing (for me anyway) is the hallway track. That is the conversations held with people after the talks spark some ideas in the brain. For me, hanging out with the Sitka team was a real highlight.
Id like to thank the organising team once again for the fantastic job they did and in particular Shirley and Tara for being utterly fantastic hosts.

Using the script here (with a couple of little mods) I generated this bit of ascii art showing the work on 3.6.0
