I forgot to mention, than in addition to being able to enter, search and display RDA records in Koha right now. Magnus Enger has done some neat work on getting Koha working with linked data http://libriotech.no/blogs/semantikoha
So should the final manifestation of RDA end up in a saner storage format then we are poised to make Koha work with that also.

RDA Support in Koha
For a long time now (since 2006 or earlier) Koha has been able to support RDA through its frameworks mechanism. But as it was a moving target no one had documented how before. Now it’s kinda settled, maybe, at least this week it is. I thought it would be a good time to write up how to add support.
And its really really simple, you go to the Koha wiki, to the frameworks page, download the RDA framework, then load it into Koha. So you want RDA support in Koha, the question you must ask yourself is : ‘Do I have 5 minutes to spare?’ (also can I afford to pay the exhorbitant amount JSC charges for the standard http://www.rdatoolkit.org/pricing). If the answer is yes, then you can have RDA support.
Here’s a record in Koha that I got from Library of Congress
The question of what do you do with these RDA compliant records now you have them is an exercise I leave up to the reader.

I bought a car by sending out a document and evaluating salespeople’s written responses
Actually I didn’t because that would be an utterly ridiculous way to buy I car. The last time I bought one, I looked at it, I test drove it, I got a mechanic to look at it. You can do all of these things with Free and Open Source software, including getting a good look at the engine. This is much harder and sometimes not even possible with proprietary software. So why would you use an RFP process to purchase software, when you have the opportunity to actually evaluate it in a meaningful way instead.
If you are hoping for me to have an answer to this I am afraid I don’t. What I do know is that a typical RFP process discriminates against Free and Open Source software, mostly because we can’t lie. I am not saying that I know for sure proprietary ILS vendors lie, (although there are documented cases of their employees lying about Open Source before) but if people can’t see your code, you can say it does whatever you like. When talking about Koha, there isn’t this option. The code is there for everyone to see, the bugs are logged publicly, we have publicly archived lists, publicly logged IRC channels. What you see is exactly what you get, we can’t say “Koha will make your coffee” because you can check if that is true or not. So I guess this is a long winded way of saying, choose Free and Open Source software … we can’t lie to you.

Bug resolution statistics for 2012 to date.
These are since 1/1/2012, you can see we close more bugs than we open, but are opening more enhancement requests than we have closed so far, which is really not a bad place to be in. Resolving 1443 in 10 months is a pretty nice statistic in itself.

Unsung heroes of Koha 26 – The Ada Lovelace Day Edition
Darla Grediagin
Darla has been using Koha from 2006, for the Bering Strait School District in Alaska. This is pretty neat in itself, what is cooler is that as far as I know, they have never had a ‘Support Contract’. Doing things either by themselves or with the help of IT personnel as needed. One of Darla’s first blogposts that I read was about her struggles trying to install Debian on an Emac. I totally respect anyone who is trying to reclaim hardware from the darkside 🙂
Darla has presented on Koha at conferences, and maintains a blog that has useful information, including sections of what she would do differently. As well as some nice feel good bits like this, from April 2007
I know I had an entry titled this before, but I do love OSS programs. Yesterday I mentioned that I would look at Pines because I like the tool it has to merge MARC records. Today a Koha developer emailed me to let me know that he is working on this for Koha and it should be available soon. I can’t imagine getting that kind of service from a vendor.
Hopefully she will be able to make it Kohacon13 in Reno, NV. It would be great to put a face to the email address 🙂
