Unit testing in Koha

There are currently 9229 unit tests in Koha, that is up from 8200 when 3.2.0 was released (15 months ago). So in the last 15 months 1009 unit tests have been added to Koha.

Well done to all those people adding tests, the coverage is slowly climbing, and errors are  being caught before release time.  So if you want to contribute to Koha, but don’t know where to start, write a unit test, we’ve had 14 year olds do it 🙂

Te Rōpū Whakahau Hui-ā-tau 2012

I was very privileged to attend the 20th Birthday Hui-ā-tau of Te Rōpū Whakahau last week at Waipapa marae in Tamaki Makaurau. It was a fantastic few days, and did wonders recharging my batteries. All the talks were great, and at least as importantly the conversations, between and after the talks were also excellent.

I think my talk went ok, and I got some nice positive feedback. I’m just glad I managed to do something that people found useful.

As you would expect at a gathering of Māori library and information workers, there were a lot of questions about Koha and the TM situation. I was happy to be able to report the lawyers had the situation under control and we were all looking forward to a positive outcome. I can’t imagine that the company who shall remain nameless will ever be doing business with any library that has any Māori influence on it.

Apart from the kōrero, there was amazing whanaungatanga and amazing kai. I would thoroughly recommend anyone Māori involved in libraries or information management join Te Rōpū Whakahau and get along to the Hui-ā-tau next year in Whakatane, I’m hooked that’s for sure.

  • 41 New developers added code to Koha in 2011
  • 167 Developers have added code to Koha since August 1999
  • 95 Developers worked on Koha in 2011
  • Biggest month was April with 40 different developers having patches pushed
  • Kohacon11 in India was a great success
  • We got our second husband and wife developer team

Some other not so nice things happened, but they were caused by people outside of Koha so I’m not going to bother with those.

2011 was the 3rd year in a row that had more commits added to it than the previous, and as you can see with the new developers the community is still growing rapidly. There is now a Koha developer on every continent (except antartica) and Koha libraries in more countries every month.

2011 was also the year of cross company collaboration, with many joint development projects and companies combining to share costs of development, as well as many libraries joining together to fund projects.

But my favourite thing is it has once again been a year of open communication, open discussion and open development, nothing is hidden and developments are released as they are done. Most companies have public git repositories so you can see the development as it is being done. In my humble opinion this is the best thing about Koha.
