Whats an Eb horn, I’ve never heard of an Eb horn.

So Laurel and I went to see Farr: Blitz last night at the Soundings theatre
at Te Papa. It was a combined performance by
Strike and the

NZ Army Band performing works by Gareth Farr. Wow, what a fantastic
concert. We enjoyed every minute of it, if you ever get the chance to see
either Strike, or the Army Band .. take it, they are great live.

PS The eb horn thing was what someone behind us said, its an E flat horn ..
but I guess the flat symbol does look like a b 🙂

No you cant have the beaches, here have some cancer instead.

From the NZ herald today “The Cervical Cancer Audit released by the Ministry
of Health today said the programme was not reaching women and making sure
they were adequately screened.

It said Maori women were screened for cervical cancer less often than
non-Maori women and when abnormalities were found, they waited longer for
investigations such as biopsies.

Maori women were twice as likely to develop
cervical cancer and four times as likely to die from it than non-Maori
women, said auditor and Maori public health physician, Dr Sue Crengle.”.

Poxy little Islands in the Pacific

Well we are sure acting like it. Today was the third and final reading of
the Foreshore and Seabed legislation, amended after the select committee
process to put into Crown ownership of all the seabed and foreshore rich
pakeha dont already own.
So basic logic here “Logic 101 : Its THEFT mate” if the crown needed
legislation to get ownership, then it stands to reason they didnt legally
own it already. Under international law (and basic common sense) the
indigenous people must then have owned it. Therefore the crown has confiscated a
huge chunk of propery. This comes as no suprise, the crown has been doing
this for 164 years already.
Lots of NZers like to think we live in a clean green, progressive, liberal
place. Perhaps I should buy a pair of the rose tinted glasses they must be
wearing, cos frankly this place is turning into a craphole.

Laurel gets a new Ankle

Laurel went in her for ankle reconstruction yesterday, it all went smoothly
and she seems to be recovering well. I took some
<a href=”http://photos.bigballofwax.co.nz/gallery/ankle”&gt; photos</a> before
and after. I’ll post an update when she is back home.

UPDATE 2004/11/18: Back home

Laurel is now back at home, and already trying to get back to work.

Open Worldcat search from Koha

Following a suggestion from
href=”http://bigballofwax.co.nz/cgi-bin/blosxom?redirectURL=http://catalogablog.blogspot.com/&#8221; onMouseOver=”window.status=’to catalogablog.blogspot.com/’; return true;” onMouseOut=”window.status=”; return true;”>David Bigwood on the Koha
mailing list. I whacked up a little proof of concept of how spawning a
search of the Open Worldcat (essentially searching lots of other libraries)
could work. If you search on something and get no results, Koha will give
you the option to either search again, or you can try searching Open
Worldcat through google. You can see it in action
href=”http://bigballofwax.co.nz/cgi-bin/blosxom?redirectURL=http://library.katipo.co.nz/cgi-bin/koha/opac-searchresults.pl?type=opac&keyword=jules+vern&#8221; onMouseOver=”window.status=’to library.katipo.co.nz/cgi-bin/koha/opac-searchresults.pl?type=opac&keyword=jules+vern’; return true;” onMouseOut=”window.status=”; return true;”>
here .

Im going to take a crack at project Gutenberg next.

Koha

UPDATE 2004/11/14: Project Gutenberg

Ok, heres what im thinking to do. Project Gutenberg make their catalog
available in XML, and they even have a simple example in perl of how to
parse it. It should be very easy to grab the catalog, parse it, and load it
into koha as items of itemtype WEB. Comments? Suggestions?

Woo hoo the Bus is on Fire!!

The steelers are on 6 game winning streak now, coming into this weekend,
after beating first the unbeaten Patriots, then the unbeaten Eagles. In game
against the Eagles they were without Duce Staley but Jerome Bettis was a
monster, rushing for 149 yards and eclipsing his season total of 125 coming
into the game.
As there is no NHL season to date (cos the players and owners are bickering
little 3 year olds) I’m following the NFL instead.
Go Steelers.
