According to Matt’s weather station the dew point got down to -2.4c last
night. And even with the sun out, its struggling to crack 7 yet. So the dogs
and I are huddled up in my office where the little fan heater plus the
warmth of the computers is keeping us toasty warm.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Now I’m going to say very little about this movie, it was all said by Cat
and Laurel on saturday night already. Suffice to say I liked it. It was fun,
go see it.
Election day
Well our votes have been cast and by about 11pm we should know what the new
government is going to be made up of. Im hoping a Labour, Greens, Maori
Party Coalition. But I’ll take anyone but National. Seriously all parties
with National in their name, should not be allowed. National Socialists,
National Front, and just plain old National all people the world would be
better without.
UPDATE 2005/09/18: Way too close
I still have a really uneasy feeling, although Labour should have the
numbers for a coalition, there is still scope for National to scrape in.
I’m still disgusted 39.6% of NZ voters gave National, and their racist
agenda, their vote. Mind you, Labour arent much better at all, they just
hide their racism a bit better. I guess its better the devil you know.
The Bar at Buena Vista
We went to see this last night at the St James theatre. Its a fantastic
night of music and dance from the surviving members of the Buena Vista
Social club, plus some younger musicians and dancers. Was a pile of fun, and
amazing listening to an 87 year old with a voice as powerful as any Ive ever
heard.
Crash
We went to see this today, and whiles its depressing in a ‘everyone is an
intolerant prick’ kind of way. It also points out that even pricks can do
good things. Its also a well shot and written film. If you dont recognise a
part of youself in at least one of the characters, you arent human. Go see
it, laugh, cry, despair .. and think a bit about the direction this country
seems to be taking.
Speeding up Circulations
Joshua and I talked the other day, and did some profiling on the circulation
scripts, and we noticed that Date::Manip was the main bottleneck. So Ive
made a copy of C4::Date and called it C4::Circulation::Date and rewrote it
to not use Date::Manip. This should win some speed increase.
Spot the beige!
If anyone was watching Inside New Zealand last night, they would have seen a
fun and interesting documentary about the Scripps spelling b as well as a
huge amount of beige shirts. Congrats to the Sticky Pictures guys for a
great little doco, and having so many people wearing beige brigade shirts was truly
fantastic. You can see some still shots on the gallery

Well it seems as Maori, theres not a lot to choose from in the 2 major
parties. We can either be patronised, and stabbed in the back by Labour. Or
insulted and stabbed in the face by National. Welcome to New Zealand 2005, a
country which the majority of people seem to want to drag back into the 1850s.
Im disgusted by
Nationals
race relation policies and I’m at least as disgusted by Labour’s failure
to respond. A simple, “you are a bunch of ignorant twats” would have been
fine, but for crying out loud, grow some spine people. If you want NZ to
turn into a shithole that treats its indigenous people like Australia treats
the Aborigines, why cant you just fuck off to Australia and leave the rest of us here.
Shut your ‘mainstream’ face.
Im glad I dont have to come into contact with many of these so called
‘Mainstream New Zealanders’ National keeps blathering on about. They sound
like complete and utter arsehats. Combine a good mixture of prejudice, with
a dollop of bigotry, add some eurocentric assimilationist tendencies and
stir with a nice spoon of ignorance, and you’ll have the people who would be
attracted to National’s attitude. It’ll be interesting, we should be able to
tell after the election the exact proportion of the voting population who
are arsehats. Lets hope for the country’s sake its less than 50%.
Very good weekend for sports.
Well all apart from the Wellington Lions playing some woeful rugby on Friday
night, its been a good weekend for sports so far. Shane Bond has returned
with a roar to One day cricket, smashing through the Indian batsman, to help
NZ win a game that should have been Indias. Then last night in one of the
closer tests you’ll ever see, the All Blacks got up to beat the Springboks.
And at the same time Stacy Jones was scoring the winning try for the
Warriors. And to top it off, if England don’t choke (and lets face it,
theres a good chance they will) they should beat Australia in the 4th Ashes
cricket test.
