The worlds slowest quiz

We went to the JJ Murphys pub quiz last night. And ‘Team Pocky’ (I know,
lame name) sucked pretty badly. Getting 73/100 right and coming in at 8th
equal. I blame the fact that we were all falling asleep because it took so
daaaammmmnnn llllooooonnnnnnggggg for the guy to read out the questions.

We plan to try another pub next week, one thats a little more practised in
the art of throwing a pub quiz night.

Well that was a Shellacking!

What a game, Dan Carter was magnificent. I was worried in those first 10
minutes, but when the AB’s got their defense sorted it was all over. I have
to say how utterly fantastic the Lions fans are. Gracious in defeat and
seeming to thoroughly enjoy themselves. I cant say the same for the lame
bunch of boys from the Hutt who were standing by us for the second half. But
lame dickheads from the Hutt aside it was a great night out.

Watching the game along with half of Wellington and what seemed to be half
the UK and Ireland as well.

Too easy again.

“Maoris have to move on, and forget about all this carry on, I mean
traditions.” Says the stupid probation officer, who cant pronounce the word
Maori, let alone Poroporoaki. What astounding arrogance .. what are we
living in 1830 still? Crusading white woman out to save us savages from our
savage ways. Go to hell you stupid bint.

Mainstream New Zealanders

This is just too easy really, Don Brash has managed to shoot himself in the
foot yet again. Defining both Maori and Homosexuals as not being mainstream,
when talking about how ‘Mainstream’ New Zealanders are getting a raw deal.

Just goes to show they really did mean it with the Iwi vs Kiwi billboards
they have. And what with Labour knee jerking and ripping out any policies
that mention Maori … its going to be a really long 3 years.

Faster search notes

Koha as always is going through a phase of optimisation. This time we are
seeking to optimise the searching. Currently the search works well, in that
its functionally correct and returns correct and complete results. The
complaint at the moment is that we are sure it can be faster.
And as programmers we wont be happy until we make it so 🙂
So tomorrow morning (nz time) we are meeting on irc to talk over some
options the main points ill be making are

  • We have 2 audiences, the librarians and the public
  • Most important, we return correct results, speed comes a close
    second
  • The public do not care (for the most part) why/how the results are
derived, just as long as they are right
  • Innovative tools will win us a little fame

I cant stress the correct results enough, its very frustrating to search for
an item, see that its on the shelf then find it isnt.

Anyone who uses the phrase Treaty Grievance Industry

Is today’s … no this years arsehat. Seriously, the next person that says
that in my hearing is going to get a right bollocking. How about the living
on stolen land industry? How about you stop the living on land you know was
stolen industry and Maori people will stop asking you for compensation for it.
And as for bro-rocracy, that seriously deserves a bat to the face.

When you win the US Open you are a New Zealander, if you rob a bank you are a Maori

So Michael Campbell won the US Open golf tournament today. And he has been
reported as a great
New Zealander now. Of course if he had done something wrong instead, he
would then be reported to be Maori.
Not to diminish from what is undoubtedly a great achievement, but its just
funny that in the climate of Iwi vs Kiwi billboards, no one is trying to
make that distinction this time.

Woo hoo

Bangladesh have beaten Australia in a One Day International, no I’m not
joking it really happened this weekend. I wonder how the Australia media are
going to spin this. They really don’t like it when their vaunted cricket
team loses, let alone to the lowest ranked team.

Lions vs Otago

This should be an interesting game, unfortunately it will be a night one
again. Im confident that on a dry fast track, most NPC sides in NZ would do
well against the Lions. Once it gets a bit wet and the ball gets slippery,
then the advantage shifts. Its a shame that the game is slowly being ruined
by the inevitable pandering to the TV networks. Day games are so much more
fun for the fans and the players.
