Unsung Heroes 19 – The Translators

All the people who have ever contributed anything at translate.koha-community.org

One of the things that makes Koha so good, is the countless hours and hours of work that people all around the world put into translating it into their languages.

There are a lot (and when I say a lot, I mean a metric craptonne) of strings for people to translate. We also don’t make it easy for them by switching out templating engines, and constantly adding more strings, but they keep trucking along keeping the translations up to date.

So keep on keeping on, every string you translate, a kitten smiles.

Next conference – LIANZA 2011

Having just got off the plane from Vancouver (well not really but it feels like it). I’m attending another conference, this time in Wellington. Kristina, Kathryn and I will be on the Catalyst stand (stand 29) for the conference. But also Kristina is presenting on Mahara, Paul, Cath and I are presenting a Koha workshop and Shelley is going to be talking about Open Source (with a focus on Koha) also.

We will of course be giving away Free ILS at the stand, free as in freedom and beer, but would also be more than happy to talk about Mahara, Moodle, Totara, Drupal, Libravatar and of course Koha.

Access 2011 – You shoulda been there.

This past week I had the privilege of attending my first ever Access conference. I had a great time and thought I should do a bit of a write up.

The venue

Access was held in Vancouver this year, which is an absolutely beautiful city. I spent most of Monday exploring Stanley Park. I got to see otters eating what looked to me like a flounder, and an eagle catch a fish too. it is a really neat place here are a couple of the photos I took on my crappy phone camera.

Tuesday started with Dim Sum, great food and great company, which I think was the theme of the entire trip. Following that I got to have a look around Tara’s library and then spent a few hours on Granville Island.

The Conference

The conference proper was awesome, there was really only one talk that I wasn’t interested in and lots that were great. The ones I enjoyed the most were:

  • Open to the Public: Indigenous Collections and the Ethics of Openness : Kimberly Christen and Alex Merrill
  • Open research data: fun, important, and in need of librarians : Heather Piwowar
  •  All together now: creating software ecosystems from open, interoperable components : Bess Sadler
The social events
These were fantastic, again great food and great company, adding in to the mix great beer too. As with any conference the talks are good, but the most important thing (for me anyway) is the hallway track. That is the conversations held with people after the talks spark some ideas in the brain. For me, hanging out with the Sitka team was a real highlight.
Id like to thank the organising team once again for the fantastic job they did and in particular Shirley and Tara for being utterly fantastic hosts.

Ding dong the witch is dead, which witch?

This guy!

With the release of Koha 3.6.0 my tenure as Release Manager is over. I’d like to thank everyone who has helped my the last 2 releases happen.

I am of course not leaving the community, but I am now freed up to do more coding again. Also, as I am no longer RM I can speak a little more freely about things which is nice also.

I am sure Koha 3.8.0 will be a great release, and I hope to get a bunch of my code into it also.

The RM is dead! Long live the RM!

Koha 3.8 Release Team spans 3 continents and 6 countries

The new release team for the 3.8 release has been elected, you can read about it at http://koha-community.org/koha-3-8-0-release-team-elected/. One of things I like, apart from the calibre of all the people involved, is that it is a truly multinational team.

There are

  • 3 people from France
  • 5 from USA
  • 1 from the Netherlands
  • 1 from Germany
  • 1 from Norway
  • 2 from New Zealand
I think thats pretty neat, and speaks to the strength of the project. Congratulations to all of them, and I know they will do a great job.

Feature freeze and Koha 3.4.5

We are well inside the feature freeze for the 3.6.0. What this means is no new patches for features will be considered for inclusion in 3.6.0. Patches already submitted and new patches for bug fixes are still up for inclusion. The next deadline is string freeze, to allow the translators time to translate.

In the meantime work on 3.4.5 has continued on and it has been released. You can read the release notes here
